Águas do Tejo Atlântico wastewater treatment plants

Industry lighting solution reduces energy costs and CO2 emissions while creating a safer working environment

Águas do Tejo Atlântico is responsible for the management and operation of multi-municipal wastewater treatment plants in Greater Lisbon and the West. The company collects and treats domestic and urban effluents to guarantee the quality, continuity and efficiency of the public water services for around 2.4 million inhabitants in 25 towns and cities.

As part of its sustainable management strategy, the company aims to improve efficiency in the use of resources by investing in renewable energies and optimising energy consumption in all of its facilities.
It decided to modernise the outdated lighting systems in the Alcântara (Lisbon) and Guia (Cascais) wastewater treatment plants, in separate phases, by more efficient ones to reduce its energy bill and CO2 emissions.

Energy and environmental benefits

In the first phase, it decided to replace 353 fixtures equipped with discharge lamps - 293 fixtures with 250W lamps (actual consumption 300W) and 60 with 150W lamps (actual consumption 180W).
They opted for the INDU BAY and OMNIFLOOD luminaires equipped with neutral white LEDs (227 x 131W and 126 x 157W).
As the facilities operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the luminaires represent a significant proportion of the energy bill and thus operating costs.

To be completely accurate, the new luminaires have cut the lighting energy consumption from 864,612kWh to 421,163kWh - more than 50%

With an average of €0.119/kWh (Portuguese reference value), this represents annual savings of more than 50,000 Euros, which signifies an average saving of €140/year per luminaire.

As a result, the CO2 emissions have also been lowered by 50%.

Excellent visibility improves working conditions

In addition to helping the company achieve its environmental goals, the lighting has dramatically improved visibility in the plant. It delivers a much better quality of light, with a higher colour rendition for a better perception of colours, to create a safer, brighter and more pleasant working environment

Minimal maintenance saves more money

Furthermore, the old fixtures required constant maintenance to change bulbs and ballasts. Due to the structure of the facilities and the safety procedures required each time, they were costing the company both money and valuable personnel time. Thanks to the long lifespan of the LEDs and the strong mechanical design of the new luminaire, maintenance operations are practically non-existent

In short, by simply upgrading the lighting in these plants, Águas do Tejo Atlântico has:
- cut energy consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 50%
- created a safer and more productive work environment with a brighter, more comfortable lighting
- reduced dramatically maintenance operations thanks to a reliable lighting system with a long service life.

A great investment!
